The gospel calls for a radical new view of how we relate to one another. Christians, as the body of Christ, are to put God first and others above themselves. Instead of self love, which puts “me” above everyone else–even God–the self-sacrificing love of God works for the common good.
The apostle Paul beautifully expresses true gospel love in his metaphor of the church as a “body”. Church members are interdependent and tenderly care for one another. But what happens if self love intrudes? It injures the church, hinders the advance of God’s kingdom, and will ultimately ruin the soul of the person who loves self first.
So who do you love today?
